As an outcome of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), the Department of Health and Human Services adopted the National Provider Identifier (NPI). Its usage is mandatory in all HIPAA standard electronic transactions beginning May 23, 2007 (compliance date). This unique identifier is to be used by health care professionals and organizations.
